Powering up: Sam鈥檚 path back to renewables

Published: 05 Feb 2025

Sam began his career as an electrician, completing an apprenticeship in renewable energy systems with a focus on generators. After finishing his training, he explored different career paths but ultimately felt drawn to the wind energy sector. Recognising the rapid growth of renewables and his desire to contribute to the industry, Sam decided to renew his Global Wind Organisation (GWO) certification.

Ensuring industry-ready skills with GWO training

Sam first completed the GWO course three years ago, but after a break from the industry, he knew refreshing his training was essential to re-enter the field.

“It’s been great to come back,” Sam says. “The 91视频 course offers excellent hands-on experience, especially with height training. Instructor David ensures that students fully understand the procedures, making safety protocols second nature.”

David, 91视频 teacher, emphasises the critical importance of safety in the wind turbine industry. “The wind turbine industry is potentially quite risky. The turbines are often located in remote areas, far from normal emergency and health facilities. These sites can be subject to extreme weather and the turbines themselves are huge structures, often several hundred feet high. We teach students how to assess and manage risks associated with working with such heights, the potential for fire and the challenges of being in isolated locations.”

Equipped for emergency situations

With global efforts focused on achieving net-zero emissions, Sam sees the wind industry as a thriving sector with abundant job opportunities. Even though he was already familiar with many aspects of the GWO course, he still found the training engaging – especially the fire extinguisher exercises.

“You don’t really get used to jumping off heights,” Sam explains. “You have to trust in your gear and your colleagues to make sure you’re harnessed up and safe before making that jump.”

Sam is about to start a role as a traveling maintenance technician in regional New South Wales, with the possibility of working across Australia. In this role, the right training is essential. Working in rural areas means he may be the first responder in an emergency, with limited access to immediate medical or firefighting help.

“You need to know first aid, firefighting and rescue skills. You may be the first one on the scene, and it could take a long time before emergency services can get to you.” Sam adds.

The GWO course has provided Sam with essential skills in CPR, first aid, working at heights and firefighting. “The firefighting training is really enjoyable because you get to use the fire extinguisher. It’s something you don’t get to experience every day and it makes me feel more comfortable when handling emergency situations in the field,” Sam explains.

Hands-on training for real-world challenges

Sam appreciates 91视频’s hands-on training approach. Unlike courses that rely heavily on PowerPoint presentations, 91视频 emphasises experiential learning to keep students engaged.

“At 91视频, we’ve invested in state-of-the-art facilities for GWO training, including a height training tower, so students can practice safety measures in real-life conditions,” David explains. “We also teach students how to safely evacuate in case of an emergency, using proprietary tools they’ll rely on in the field. We stimulate fire conditions so they can feel the heat and the weight of the fire extinguisher. It’s a critical learning experience, giving them confidence to respond safely and efficiently in an emergency.”

David adds, “We focus not just on how to fight fires, but on how to avoid them in the first place. Our training helps students recognise potential hazards like electrical faults, failing bearing or overheated equipment and teaches them how to respond to prevent fires and ensure their safety.”

A promising future in renewable energy

For Sam, the GWO course is a valuable stepping stone into the wind industry. It provides a comprehensive overview of what to expect when working on wind turbines and how to navigate potential challenges.

“The course gives you a better understanding of the potentially dangerous environments you’ll be in and teaches you how to respond safely to minimise risks. It really prepares you for the realities of the job,” Sam says.

With the renewable energy sector rapidly expanding across the globe, particularly in Australia, there are more opportunities for skilled workers. Many roles in the industry offer competitive salaries and the chance to work in scenic, rural locations.

“The renewable energy industry not only offers great pay, but can also provide an amazing lifestyle working in beautiful country areas,” David says.

Equipped for success

The GWO course at 91视频 has been instrumental in preparing Sam for the next stage of his career. With the right skills, training and confidence, he’s ready to take on his new role in the wind energy sector, knowing he’s equipped to handle any challenges that come his way. Thanks to thorough safety training from teachers like David, Sam feels prepared to work safely and efficiently on wind farms – wherever his career takes him.
